Between Vault

Private by default. Shared by choice. No cloud required.

Between Vault is a notes vault for two. It lives on your iPhones, and nothing leaves them unless you send it.

Free. Open source. No cloud.

What it is

A shared place for the things a couple needs to know: insurance numbers, doctor contacts, the boiler manual, the wifi password at your parents' house. Each of you keeps your own vault on your own phone, and you decide, item by item, what your partner gets.

Inside the app

Real screens from the app, with sample notes.

How it works

  1. 1

    Store

Write it down. It is stored locally on your device.

    Your iPhonevault stays here
  2. 2

    Seal

Mark what your partner should have, then review exactly what leaves.

    Sealed notesencrypted for one phone
  3. 3

    Exchange

Hold your phones side by side. They connect directly, your partner accepts, and only then is it shared. Apart? Send one encrypted file instead.

    Partner's iPhoneaccepts, then it's shared

No server in between. The phones talk directly, with no internet. A file sent by AirDrop, Messages or Files carries only sealed, encrypted notes.

Why it is different

  • No cloud storage. Your vault is stored on your device. The app never uploads it.
  • No automatic synchronization. You control when information is shared.
  • No account. No email, phone number or sign in inside the app.
  • End to end encrypted exchange between two paired phones.
  • Your partner can recover your vault by design. Pairing is also your backup plan.

The honest limit. If both phones are lost and there is no backup, your data is gone. We cannot restore it, because we never had it.

Free, forever $0

Notes, pairing, exchange and backup. No trial, no limits on notes.

The code is free under GPLv3. You can build it yourself. The later purchase pays for updates and publishing.

Read the code. Check our claims.

Everything is open source under GPLv3. The exchange format is documented in PROTOCOL.md, and the threat model says plainly what we do and do not protect against. Audits welcome.

I built this for my relationship. The code is open so you do not have to trust me.

Questions

Is there really no server?

Yes. The app has no backend. Side by side, your two phones connect directly over Wi-Fi, with no internet. Apart, you send one encrypted file yourself, through AirDrop, Messages or Files.

What if I lose my phone?

Pair your new phone with your partner and they send back your recovery copy: your vault key. Your notes from an iPhone backup open again, and everything you shared is still on their phone. If both phones are lost with no backup, the data is gone.

Why open source?

Because "trust us" is not a security model. You, or someone you trust, can read every line.

When does it launch?

Soon. Join the list and we will send one email when it is on the App Store.

Do you track me?

No. Not even on this website: no analytics, no cookies, and this page loads nothing from anyone else.
